Omah Lay

[Nigerian]

Biography

Early Life & Music Origins
Born Stanley Omah Didia on May 19, 1997, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, music practically ran in his veins. His grandfather was a drummer for Celestine Ukwu, a legendary highlife singer in the 1970s, and his father was a drummer as well.
Omah Lay grew up in the Marine Base neighborhood of Port Harcourt. He actually started his musical journey as a teenager under the rap moniker “Lil King.” Over time, he transitioned behind the scenes to learn music production because he wasn’t getting the specific beats he wanted for his songs. However, after producing tracks for other local artists without getting much credit, he decided it was time to step back up to the microphone himself.
The Breakthrough
In 2019, he released early tracks like “Do Not Disturb” and “Hello Brother,” which caught the attention of the record label KeyQaad. After signing with them, he relocated to Lagos, the entertainment hub of Nigeria.
His monumental breakthrough came in May 2020 with the release of his debut EP, Get Layd. Dropping right in the middle of the global lockdown, the EP became an instant sensation. Tracks like “You” and “Bad Influence” achieved millions of streams, showcasing his unique formula: a smooth voice singing incredibly raw, vulnerable lyrics about heartbreak, vice, and mental health over intoxicating slow-burn instrumentals.
Career Milestones
Following his quick rise, Omah Lay solidifed his spot as a global star:
The Headies Next Rated (2020): He won this highly coveted award in Nigeria, which historically predicts the next massive Afrobeats superstar.
Global Collaborations: In 2021, he teamed up with American pop star Justin Bieber for the hit single “Attention.”
Boy Alone (2022): He released his highly acclaimed debut studio album, Boy Alone. The album was praised for its intense emotional honesty, tackling his struggles with fame, depression, and relationships. It featured massive hits like “Understand” and “Soso.”
