Michael Jackson

[American]

Biography

Michael Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and entertainer whose career spanned from childhood with the Jackson 5 to global solo superstardom. Widely known as the “King of Pop,” he transformed popular music through his recordings, performances, music videos, and dance, becoming one of the most influential artists in modern music history.

Career highlights

Jackson began performing as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 in the late 1960s before launching a solo career. His breakthrough solo album, Off the Wall (1979), was followed by Thriller (1982), which remains the best-selling album in history. He later released other landmark albums including Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (1995), and **Invincible (2001).

Musical style and influence

Jackson blended pop, R&B, soul, funk, rock, and dance music into a distinctive style. His performances featured intricate choreography, cinematic music videos, and signature moves such as the moonwalk, which became one of the most recognisable dance moves in popular culture. His work also helped expand the role of music videos as an artistic medium and contributed to breaking racial barriers on television channels such as MTV during the 1980s.

Awards and legacy

Jackson won 13 Grammy Awards, including a record-setting eight Grammy wins in a single night in 1984 for Thriller. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once as a member of the Jackson 5 and once as a solo artist. His catalogue includes enduring hits such as “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Man in the Mirror,” and “Black or White.”

Later years

Jackson’s later life was marked by significant public controversy, including allegations of child sexual abuse. A civil case in 1993 was settled out of court, and in a separate criminal case he was tried and acquitted on all charges in 2005. While preparing for his planned This Is It concert residency, he died on 25 June 2009 in Los Angeles at the age of 50. His death was ruled a homicide resulting from a lethal combination of sedatives and propofol administered by his personal physician, who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
